Introduction

  • The Oral and Maxillofacial surgery department (OMFS) is a unit of dentistry having out door and indoor facilities in Main Islamabad and Children Hospital PIMS, and School of Dentistry
  • Since its inception in 1986 in PIMS, the department has come a long way both in terms of patient care as well as training of future surgeons
  • Post graduate training programs like MDS and FCPS are also being offered at this department and a number of post graduate students have passed their degree in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from this prestigious department started in PIMS, and serving in the various part of the country.
  • The department in its limited resources always tried its best to help and treat patients in PIMS and will improve patient care in New setup.
  • A lot of people coming from far flung areas are taken good care by the doctors available.
  • A team of doctors are available round the clock and specialists are always approachable who together with their dedication and efforts have not only helped the patients but have made the department grow and flourish.

List Of Services

  • Dentoalveolar Surgery: Extraction of simple routine teeth to difficult tooth extractions, like various types of impacted teeth, extraction on medically compromised patients, Apicectomies, pre-prosthetic surgery(ridge augmentation, sharp bone removal etc) to provide better anatomy for placement of implants, dentures or other dental prosthesis.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of;
    Benign pathology (Cysts, odontogenic and nonodontogenic tumors)
    Malignant pathology (Oral and head and neck cancers)
  • Diagnosis and management of premalignant lesions and conditions.(Leukoplakia, Lichen planus, OSF etc )
  • Management of Orofacial pain disorders.
  • Management of TMJ(temporomandibular joint) disorders.
  • Management of trauma to maxillofacial region including:
    Mandibular fractures
    Maxillary fractures(Lefort #s)
    Pan facial Trauma
    Firearm Injury
    Soft tissue trauma to head and neck region.
  • Diagnosis and Management of infections.
    Facial space infections(including life threatening conditions like Ludwig's Angina and Necrotizing fasciitis.)
    Viral ,Bacterial and fungal infections of oral cavity.
    Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgias ( injectable therapy and Peripheral Neurectomy).

Academics

  • At Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery we try to serve our community with the highest level of care possible. We stay committed to this goal through extensive continuing education of the doctors and staff.
  • Since its establishment we have been training post graduate residents of MDS and FCPS and the successful doctors are now working in different parts of country as well as abroad.
  • We have been conducting weekly presentation and discussion session in auditorium in which all the residents and house officers take extensive part in sharing their knowledge on different subjects and topics of basic sciences as well as the latest advances made in Modern age of medical field.
  • Doctors are assigned different topics to come and present on stage which help in their communication and presentation skills.
  • Academic sessions are some times conducted in collaboration with other disciplines of PIMS like ENT, Plastic surgery, Dermatology, Neurosurgery and Operative Dentistry to share with them our experiences and get benefit from their knowledge and experience in head and neck region.
  • Extensive case discussion and treatment planning is done during daily ward rounds and clinical examination skills are polished under the supervision of seniors. Post graduate training programs involve lectures, seminars, ward rounds, journal club and clinical training for period of four years.

Research

  • The goal of the Oral and Maxillofacial surgery department is to train residents and students in the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery. This is accomplished through provision of out patient clinical experience, inpatient care services and emergency services based on sound scientific principles and instruction while contributing to new knowledge through Advances in Research.
  • All the residents have been assigned different topics of research as a mandatory part of their training. In the past good amount of research has been done in our department in the fields of Oral and Maxillofacial trauma, oral pathology, prosthetic rehabilitation as well as facial neurological deficits.
  • Many of our research topics have been published in renowned medical and dental journals as well. It is our firm belief that with the provision of better facilities and environment our department has full potential to contribute and research in the more advanced fields like cancers, micro vascular, corrective and cosmetic facial surgeries and stem cell regeneration of oral tissues.
  • As part of the postgraduate training programs (MDS/FCPS),residents are required to undertake a research project under supervision. They are required to carry out practical work and to produce an original written thesis in connection with it. The topic of the project is finalized between the residents, the director and the project supervisors. Every effort is made to allow the residents to work in an area in which they are interested.
